As a finance student at St. Cloud State, you’ll learn the important role finance plays for business, industry, government and nonprofit groups in connecting the present to their future. Students who major in computer science will find themselves with the skills that drive advances in tomorrow’s business, industry and homes. You’ll be taught by a diverse faculty whose global research and reputations mean you’ll focus on the latest computer science advancements. You’ll start with theoretical and practical application courses such as programming, data structures, operating systems, problem solving, digital logic, data algorithms and ethics. As a Biology: Biodiversity, Ecology, and Evolution major your coursework will include a breadth of topics at the cutting edge of recent biological advances. Students in the economics major will develop the analytical skills to understand private, nonprofit and government influences in order to help them improve society. Students who major in electrical engineering will serve a key role in developing and improving the high-tech devices that orchestrate our lives and our work today and for future generations. Through a path of study that uses hands-on, project-based courses with laboratory components, you will develop skills for jobs involving computers; satellites and wireless systems; broadband cable; Global Positioning Systems; circuits and robot controls; ultrasound, MRI and CT scanners; TV, stereo and telephone products; power systems; and image and sound products. As a student in the elementary education and teaching programs you’ll learn how to motivate and challenge students and prepare them for personal and educational success. You will learn how to create lessons and projects, and you will hone your instruction skills in real work experiences. Our courses will help you develop the tools for managing and counseling students’ behaviors in the classroom. Your senior year student-teaching experience will help you demonstrate leadership in the classroom and among fellow educators.

When you study manufacturing engineering at St. Cloud State, you’ll become a person who plans and builds the production systems for goods that drive the world’s economies – everything from computers to automobiles to freezers. Students who study nursing will become registered nurses and health professionals who provide patient care of the mind, body and spirit. Your courses will include anatomy, microbiology, developmental psychology and sociology and will emphasize cultural training that will prepare you to work in contemporary health settings. You will learn how to promote wellness, advocate for patients and health programs, and you’ll develop the critical-thinking skills to address the changing needs of patients and communities. The program will build your skills and the confidence to create proficient and effective of health care systems.

Students in the general business major are entering a global field where information, economics and people collide. You will be prepared to enter and lead in a variety of industries. You will develop the skills in the role computer-based information systems play in organizations, how to assess global, domestic and industry trends and how to manage people, information, technology and more to produce goods and services. You will have a well-rounded business education touching on accounting, business law, computing, economics, marketing and statistics.

Students majoring in chemistry embark on a path leading to achievements in medicine, agriculture, health and technology. You will be mentored, engage in research and collaborate with faculty distinguished in research on diabetes, cancer, epilepsy, materials science, medical devices, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory agents. You will gain the hands-on experience on modern analytical instruments and in computational methods needed to substantiate scientific discoveries. You will supplement classroom learning with on-the-job experience in government agencies, corporations and research laboratories.

Students who graduate with one of our marketing degrees find themselves at the center of business decisions in local, national and international organizations. That attention quickly positions them to move into executive and community leadership positions as their careers develop. You will complete the core program of the Herberger Business School and develop skills and insight into product planning, professional selling, market research, advertising, promotion, retail, sales management and customer service. You will graduate well prepared to compete for and succeed in high-demand positions in traditional and emerging areas of the marketing discipline.

As a student pursuing a Software Engineering degree, you will complete significant projects every semester building skills in communication, teamwork, critical thinking and professionalism. The program blends engineering principles, computing skills, project management and software construction supplying you with a comprehensive understanding of the field and preparing you for the workforce or future study.

Students in the Recreation and Sports Management major learn how to bridge the fields of sports, recreation and business to have an impact in a fast-growing economic segment of a society eager to balance work and life. Your courses will teach you business, sales, marketing skills, health and safety standards and public relations techniques. We’ll train you to understand the personal and social dynamics of leisure and recreation. You’ll gain organization, administration and management skills to use in park and recreation departments, professional sports organizations, fitness programs, recreation and aquatic facilities, golf courses, resorts and fitness centers and camps.

When you study graphic design at St. Cloud State, you’ll develop your skills in communicating visually through typography and images. As a hospitality and tourism major you are preparing for a career in one of the world’s largest and fastest growing industries. In preparation to manage tour companies, destinations and travel-related services, you’ll practice working with airlines, event planners, tour operations, hotels and cruise lines to develop insight on arranging your own travel as well as corporate and group travel. You will be part of faculty tours to Europe, Asia and Africa, visit Minnesota’s hot spots and examine the latest issues in a fast-growing industry. You’ll put together a toolbox for a career that involves marketing, sales, travel, tourism and convention planning.

As a student of anthropology devoted to the study of humankind, you will examine human origins, life in the ancient past and the unending diversity of contemporary human cultures. The program will provide you with a broad background in all of anthropology’s major divisions – biological anthropology, archaeology, linguistic anthropology and cultural anthropology. Required field work and research will give you the hands-on experience needed to prepare for graduate school in anthropology, as well as careers that require an understanding of cultural diversity – global and local – including international business, forensics, museum work and public policy.

As an art history major, you’ll study art in its historical and cultural contexts. You’ll examine the genre, design and style of major works including paintings, sculpture and architecture as well as contemporary media and cultural practices. Your focus will be global and contemporary art and also include related fields such as film history or anthropology. Through your coursework, you’ll explore questions such as: What are this style’s key features? What meaning did this convey when it was made and does this meaning differ now? How does the art function visually and culturally? What roles has art played historically and socially? An optional internship will enable you to gain experience in a gallery, art center, arts organization or museum.

As a student majoring in studio art with a concentration in drawing, painting and printmaking, you’ll explore established and non-traditional approaches to two-dimensional art, including works on paper, oil and acrylic painting, relief printing, intaglio, lithography and screen-printing. You’ll be prompted by nationally- and internationally-recognized faculty members to develop your individual direction with the mediums or a combination of them. On-campus and community galleries will provide you the opportunity to develop exhibition and curatorial skills.

As a student majoring in studio art with a 3-D media concentration, you’ll explore fundamental techniques and theories in sculpture and ceramics. You’ll develop the technical and conceptual skills to create and the intellectual skills to analyze and evaluate artwork. You’ll learn about the processes for working in materials such as wood, metal, plaster, plastics, textiles and clay; as well as using non-traditional materials and found objects; creating installations and performances; and undertaking multimedia projects. On-campus and community galleries will provide you the opportunity to develop exhibition and curatorial skills.

As a student interested earning a degree in chemistry education for middle school and high school students, you will work across programs in the College of Science and Engineering and the School of Education. Through professional development opportunities and field training you will develop skills to help you create innovative curriculum, and adapt the latest teaching methods and technological tools to engage and inspire your future students. You will gain significant insights into the latest issues and topics in chemistry through research underway on campus. Creative co-teaching programs will also give you the opportunity to visit and practice teaching in science classrooms with support from experienced teachers.

Communication sciences and disorders majors get the pre-professional training that leads them to careers that help those with speech and language differences and disorders. You’ll learn how language and speech develop, how to identify and treat differences, delays and disorders in speech and language. The classes you’ll take focus on basic communication and normal development of communication. You’ll learn when clinical intervention is necessary and spend a semester working in a professional clinic on campus.

Students who choose an intercultural communication minor will prepare to work effectively in a culturally diverse and increasingly interdependent world. You’ll be introduced to the dynamics, opportunities and challenges of communicating with people from all kinds of backgrounds and traditions. You’ll master problem-solving and critical-thinking skills as well as intercultural communication principles. You’ll explore opportunities to use them locally, nationally and abroad. The leadership skills you develop will be valued in personal as well as professional situations. And, your degree will complement many areas of study to create a unique opportunity for work in your fields of interest.

Students who choose a persuasion and advocacy major in communication excel at influencing others on social issues and advocating for positions and causes they feel passionate about. You’ll learn how people, businesses and communities use communication to shape their identity. You’ll build international communication skills needed to succeed in personal and public settings. You’ll learn to think globally and use rhetorical intervention to communicate ethically in writing and in actions. As a relational communication major, you’ll learn how to help people manage the personal, social and professional relationships that drive their lives. You’ll prepare for work in human resources, conflict management and event planning or be ready to design your own career opportunity in the profit or not-for-profit sectors. You’ll learn about conversation and conflict management, listening and gender in contexts such as family, friendship, romance and employment. You’ll practice the problem-solving and leadership skills you acquire in internships and intercultural experiences on and off campus. Students in our community health major prepare to build communities that promote and practice healthful living. You’ll learn to advocate for and create community health programs such as first aid, blood pressure screening, tobacco cessation, drug awareness and disease prevention. You’ll study preventive medicine, health care services management, health policy and health law enforcement. Through classwork and field work, you’ll learn how to do outreach for public health, non-profit and medical health agencies and organizations that support healthy lifestyles. And, you’ll have opportunities to apply that learning in activities, campus programs, internships and volunteer situations that help people and communities adopt healthful behaviors.

Students in the community psychology major learn to advocate for the mental and behavioral health of diverse and underserved individuals, families and groups. Through curriculum and community experiences, you’ll learn to understand people in the framework of their culture and help empower them in the community. You will apply community psychology principles in service learning, field work and internship experiences.

As a criminal justice student at St. Cloud State, you’ll learn how society deals with crime and other forms of injustice and victimization – and how to prevent it. The Criminal Justice Studies program emphasizes the intersections of corrections, courts, juvenile justice, law enforcement, private security and various service agencies.

Students may choose a concentration – 21st Century Policing, Corrections and Reentry, Victim Services – or broaden their learning with an electives option.

As a student in the early childhood education major, you’ll learn to work with children and families in the classroom and in the field. You will be trained to assess a child’s needs, design lesson plans and tutor for success to create the best learning environments for children. As an Earth and Space Science (9-12) or General Science (5-8) Education major at St. Cloud State University, you will be part of an interdisciplinary program in the College of Science and Engineering and the School of Education. To prepare you to teach Earth and Space Science classes at the high school level or any science class at the middle school level, your coursework will allow you to develop skills necessary to create innovative curriculum, laboratory exercises, and assignments to engage your future students. Students in the Communication Arts and Literature program prepare to teach grades 5 to 12 with a passion for learning and commitment to creating a better world in the classroom and beyond through education.

As a student in the social work program, you’ll find a strong emphasis on diversity and social justice. As a student in the Herberger Business School’s entrepreneurship program you’ll learn how to become an effective and successful entrepreneur in a diverse, global economy that needs small business leaders willing to develop new ideas and new industries. Students who major in applied sociology work toward understanding how people live and work together in times of harmony and in times of discord so they can use that knowledge in a variety of careers. Through classes, internships and volunteer opportunities, you’ll learn problem-solving skills that are powerful tools when you’re involved in the interactions between individuals, groups, communities and those engaged in global issues. You’ll build skills in writing, oral communication, analytical thinking and interpersonal relations that will be tools in any field of work you pursue.

As a hydrology major at St. Cloud State University, you will study the critical roles of Earth’s surface water and groundwater, and how they are tested daily, on a global basis, by population growth and ever-changing technologies. Through academically rigorous laboratory work, field work, and coursework in mathematics, physics, hydrology, and geology, you will learn about the impacts humans have on water and the Earth’s varied environments.  Additionally, by studying aquifers and wells, contaminants, floods, and erosion, you will acquire the skills to prepare you to manage water uses, assess water quality, and investigate how water shapes landscapes and impacts human activities. 

As an insurance major, you will learn how important risk management, and the insurance industry, is to maintaining a growing economy. You will learn all aspects of insurance operations – underwriting, claims adjusting, insurance accounting, loss control and risk management. You will gain an overall understanding of risk analysis. Insurance majors will be prepared to start a career in all areas of the insurance industry.

Students who want to earn a bachelor’s degree in land surveying and mapping sciences often come to the program through two-year training programs or to update their knowledge and practices to be able to take leadership positions. Through coursework and fieldwork, you’ll hone your skills in mathematics, cartography and the use of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS); use the latest survey instruments; and study boundary law changes and new site development techniques. Laboratories and fieldwork will provide opportunities to practice in the evolving field of geomatics, or the art and science of determining the measurable points on, above or under the Earth’s surface.

When you choose the Latin American Studies program, you will learn about the people, lands and cultures of Latin America and their interactions with the rest of the world. You’ll study their language and their history as well as the social, economic, environmental and international issues facing the countries of that region. You will complete a year of coursework in Spanish or Portuguese and be encouraged to travel to view situations first-hand. Through service-learning projects and internships, you’ll have opportunities to work alongside those hoping to improve their corner of the world.

Life science education majors combine science courses with St. Cloud State’s nationally recognized teacher preparation program to receive the best training and insight on educating and inspiring the scientists of tomorrow. You’ll tap your creativity to develop laboratory experiments that will keep middle school or high school students engaged in scientific discovery. If you choose a study path toward a bachelor of elective studies degree in life sciences, you’ll take courses in biology and chemistry and pair those with an array of elective courses. You will design your degree based on your interests, even if they are in a program not specifically offered at St. Cloud State. You’ll have access to an impressive array of specialized laboratories to supplement your classroom learning. You’ll be taught by faculty members who are engaged in current research and who involve undergraduates in that research. You’ll prepare for a future in research, education or fieldwork.

Manufacturing Engineering Technology is an applied engineering field that looks for better ways to manufacture products. This includes reducing cycle times, maintaining quality and keeping costs reasonable.

The field emphasizes engineering problem solving using a hands-on approach rather than the complex analysis that an engineer would typically use. Technologists often work closely with engineers and technicians. In manufacturing the technologist often has the rewarding challenge of working with many departments in the company, from sales to shipping. The curriculum focuses on hands-on experiences to prepare the graduate for an exciting career in the midst of production activity.

As a mathematics teaching major you will learn how to share the beauty, elegance and order found in mathematics with all students.  You will obtain solid backgrounds in education principles and mathematics content and will be provided with diverse, authentic and relevant teaching opportunities.  You will acquire the skills to structure an effective mathematics classroom and create and teach lessons that will engage and inspire your students.

When you work to become a medical laboratory scientist you will learn how to examine and analyze tissues and bodily fluids to help doctors diagnose and treat diseases. Students who want more responsibility, promotions and pay and already work as medical lab technicians use the program to become medical lab scientists. You’ll hone your skill at tests and laboratory procedures that will to find the chemicals, microorganisms and proteins that will tell doctors how to find the most-effective treatment. You will gain academic and hospital laboratory training and work in one of our clinical affiliates.

As a meteorology major at St. Cloud State University, you will examine and conduct research on short-term and long-term atmospheric changes. Students who choose the physics education major will combine science courses with education courses to prepare for teaching middle school and high school students. As a radiologic technology student you will learn how to work closely with patients and how to take conventional clinical X-ray images. You will be educated in anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, equipment protocols and radiation safety. After graduating you may specialize in one or more specific techniques such as bone densitometry, interventional radiography, computed tomography, mammography, and magnetic resonance imaging. The St. Cloud State radiologic technology program does not include any training in sonography (ultrasound imaging).

As a psychology student, you’ll scientifically study human behavior to learn why we behave the way we do and how we can apply that knowledge. Your courses will give you perspectives on personality, thinking, emotion, human development and mental disorders. Through class, laboratory and field work, you’ll develop critical-thinking, communications and research skills applicable in many fields: education, health, business and international relations. Your experiences will prepare you for graduate school in psychology or related fields, but also for a wide variety of jobs/careers that value the knowledge and analytical skills of our psychology degree. There are no jobs that require a psychology bachelor’s degree, but many for which it is a desirable or acceptable qualification, such as human resources, marketing, sales, social services and others.

Students in the political science program at St. Cloud State University learn how governments and political parties influence policies and practices around the world. You’ll study the role voters, nonvoters and polling play in political and government decision-making. Through a range of core courses, you’ll get a local and global perspective on government, international relations and political theory. Your internship and campus activities and organizations will give you a chance to put what you learn into practice. As a political science graduate you’ll have options for work in government, law or education.

Students who choose an art major will work with artists who have national and international reputations in their field while they build their own strong foundation and general experience in the visual arts. Beyond the basics gained in lectures and discussions, you’ll select studio courses such as printmaking, painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video, painting, ceramics, installation and multimedia. Education Abroad opportunities will allow you to develop a global view of art. Visiting artists including Jesse Bransford and Nina Katchadourian and art professionals such as Eric Crosby, assistant curator of the Walker Art Center, help to round out your experience.

As an athletic training major you’ll learn to prevent, assess and treat bone and muscle injuries and illnesses. You’ll acquire knowledge, skills and an understanding of physical activity that allow you to work in health, education, government and corporate settings. You will learn risk management, injury and illness pathology, acute care, therapeutic exercise, psychosocial intervention and pharmacology.
